First published in 1865, The Law Reports represent the benchmark in law reporting. They are the most authoritative reports and cited in preference.
The Law Reports give a fuller treatment to cases reported in Volumes 2 and 3 of The Weekly Law Reports which are considered to be of particular interest, which introduce new principles or rules of law or modify existing ones, which settle or materially settle questions upon which the law is doubtful or vague or which for any reason reform or develop the law.
Separate volumes are produced for the:
- Appeal Cases
- Queen's Bench
- Chancery and Family
The distinguishing feature between The Weekly Law Reports and The Law Reports is that The Law Reports include arguments of Counsel.
The Law Reports cover cases heard in:
- Appeal cases in the House of Lords and Privy Council
- Queen's Bench Division
- Chancery Division
- Family Division
Format :
The Law Reports are published monthly on a calendar year basis and divided into sections covering 1) Appeal Cases in the House of Lords and Privy Council (AC), 2) the Queen's Bench Division (QB), and 3) the Chancery and Family Divisions (Ch and Fam).
The standard paper edition is produced as three separate booklets (AC, Ch and Fam, and QB).
